Domestic Violence and the Protection of Children's Rights: Legal Education and Strengthening the Role of the Wajo Regency UPTD PPA

Abstract

Domestic violence is a legal and social issue that impacts not only the directly victimized partner but also children within the household, whether as direct victims or as witnesses to the violence. Children raised in households marked by violence are at risk of psychological disorders and developmental delays, and may potentially become "Children in Conflict with the Law" (ABH) later in life—either as victims or perpetrators. This situation demonstrates that addressing domestic violence cannot be separated from comprehensive efforts to protect children's rights. This community service initiative aims to enhance public understanding of the link between domestic violence and child rights protection, introduce the legal basis for child protection, and highlight the role of the Wajo Regency Regional Technical Implementation Unit for the Protection of Women and Children (UPTD PPA) in handling such cases. The activity employed an educational and participatory approach, featuring legal education, public outreach, group discussions, Q&A sessions, field observations, and activity documentation. The material covered definitions and forms of domestic violence, its impact on children, children's rights requiring protection within the family, the legal framework for child protection, case reporting mechanisms, and the six services provided by UPTD PPA. The results indicate an increased understanding among participants that children are affected by domestic violence cases—even when not the direct targets of abuse—and a growing awareness of the importance of involving service agencies like UPTD PPA when handling cases involving children. This initiative underscores that sustained legal education, combined with the strengthening of service agencies and active community participation, constitutes a strategic step toward creating a safe family environment for children's growth and development.
